A pattern floor takes more planning, more cutting and a steadier hand than a straight-lay floor. We set the layout carefully, keep the points tight, and balance the borders so the pattern reads clean across the whole room. A pattern floor is only as tight as its base: NWFA calls for a 3/4-inch expansion gap at the perimeter and a subfloor flat to within 3/16 inch over 10 feet for glue-down, with parquet allowed a minimum 1/2-inch gap.

Herringbone and chevron punish a base that is not flat and an install that ignores movement. Beyond the perimeter gap, the pattern needs a genuinely level, solid subfloor so the points stay tight through Ottawa’s humidity swing. Parquet carries its own rule – a minimum 1/2-inch expansion gap rather than the 3/4 inch used for strip and plank. For traditional parquet we can supply Canadian-made wood such as Dubeau, a Papineauville maker with roots to 1936, now part of the Lauzon group. Precise gaps and a flat base are what let a demanding pattern read clean across the whole room.
