How a hardwood floor is actually installed to spec
Good hardwood work is measurable. The National Wood Flooring Association calls for a nail-down subfloor flat to within 1/4 inch over 10 feet, solid boards installed within 2 percent moisture content of the subfloor for planks 3 inches and wider (4 percent for strip under 3 inches), a blind-nail schedule every 6 to 8 inches on wide plank, at least two fasteners 1 to 3 inches from each board end, and a 3/4-inch expansion gap at every wall. We install to those tolerances, and we can supply Canadian-milled wood – Mirage out of Saint-Georges, Quebec, or Lauzon out of Papineauville – as part of the installation. It is the difference between a hardwood floor that stays flat and tight and one that gaps by its first Ottawa winter.
