Why it matters

Not every scratch needs a full refinish

A few scratches, a pet-worn path by the door, or a gouge from a dropped pan does not mean sanding the whole floor. In many cases we can repair the spot – fill, colour-match and blend the finish – so it disappears into the boards around it. We will tell you honestly when a spot repair will do, and when the floor is worn enough that refinishing is the better value. A blended board swap only disappears if the new board is fitted within NWFA’s moisture-content tolerance of the floor around it – no more than 2 percent for boards 3 inches and wider – which is why we check before we cut.

What you get

Real outcomes, not just a list of services.

Pet scratches blended out

Surface scratches and worn pet paths filled and colour-matched to vanish.

Gouges and dents repaired

Deeper damage filled and finished so the spot is hard to find.

Colour and sheen matched

We match stain and finish so the repair does not stand out.

Single boards replaced

Where a board is beyond repair we swap and blend just that one.

Spot repair, not a full sand

You pay to fix the damage, not to redo the whole room.

Honest repair-or-refinish advice

If the floor is broadly worn, we will say refinishing is smarter.

Scratched Hardwood Floor Repair FAQs

Can you repair scratches without refinishing the whole floor?

In most cases yes. We spot-repair, colour-match and blend individual scratches and gouges so you avoid a full sand-and-refinish.

Is this the same as hardwood refinishing?

No. This is spot repair for isolated scratches and damage. If most of the floor is worn or dull, full sanding and refinishing is a separate service and often the better value.

Will the repair be noticeable?

We match the stain and finish so it blends in. On very fine surface scratches a maintenance coat can also help.

Can you fix pet scratches?

Yes, pet scratches and worn paths are one of the most common repairs we do.

What if a board is too damaged to repair?

We replace just that board and blend it to the surrounding wood, rather than redoing the room.

Are you insured?

Yes, fully insured.

Ottawa specifics

Species, hardness and why some floors scratch first

How easily a floor marks is partly the species. On the Janka side-hardness scale (USDA Forest Products Laboratory), northern red oak sits at 1,290 lbf, white oak at 1,360, hard maple at 1,450 and black walnut at just 1,010 – so a softer walnut floor shows a pet scratch a maple would shrug off, and the right repair differs with it. For a spot repair we match species, fill and finish and blend into the boards around it; when most of the floor is worn, a full refinish is the better value, and we will tell you which. Either way the fix is matched to the wood you actually have.
