Why it matters

Cold tile is an Ottawa problem worth solving

Tile is beautiful and tough, but on a January morning it is cold underfoot. Electric in-floor heating fixes that – a thin heating mat under the tile that warms the floor and takes the chill off the whole room. It is best installed at the same time as new tile, over a properly prepared base, with the electrical side done to code. We handle the heat and the tile together so it is one clean job. For any wood going over radiant heat we use an adhesive rated for it – SikaBond T55, a moisture-cured polyurethane suitable over radiant systems – so the floor and the heat work together instead of against each other.

In-Floor Heating Installation FAQs

Is in-floor heating worth it in Ottawa?

For tile in bathrooms, kitchens and entries it is a popular upgrade here – it takes the winter chill off the floor and the room, and runs only when you want it.

Does in-floor heating have to go in with new tile?

Electric radiant heat is best installed at the same time as the tile, since the mat sits in the setting bed under it. We plan them together.

What floors can have in-floor heating?

Tile is the classic pairing. Some engineered wood and LVP are rated for radiant heat too – we confirm the product limits before installing.

Who does the electrical connection?

The heating mat is installed with the tile and connected to a thermostat to code. We coordinate the electrical side so it is done properly.

Can I heat just one room?

Yes, electric in-floor heating is easy to zone to a single room like a bathroom, on its own thermostat and timer.

Are you insured?

Yes, fully insured.

Ottawa specifics

Heat plus an Ottawa winter is a dryness problem

Radiant heat and an Ottawa winter both pull moisture out of a floor. The National Research Council measured winter indoor humidity in Ottawa houses at 26 to 29 percent (1967), already below NWFA’s 30 to 50 percent range for solid wood, and radiant heat drives the wood’s own moisture lower still. That is why tile is the classic pairing for in-floor heat, and why any wood used over it should be engineered and carefully acclimated within the manufacturer’s limits. We plan the heat and the finished floor as one job so the warmth is even and the floor stays stable.
