The Glebe is one of Ottawa’s oldest neighbourhoods, full of Edwardian and early-1900s homes near Bank Street and the canal. Many still have their original hardwood worth refinishing, and original plank subfloors that need attention before new flooring. Being central, it is a short trip from our Laurier Avenue office. The Glebe was essentially built out before the war – by 1931 only 298 vacant lots remained (Glebe Community Association history) – so most homes here are pre-war stock.

What a pre-war Glebe home asks of a floor
Homes of this era usually sit on an original board subfloor, laid diagonally across the joists as Ontario’s code still requires, with gaps left on purpose for drainage – so before laminate or LVP we add a panel underlay, and before wide solid hardwood we check the levelling. Original single-glazed windows also mean the house cannot be humidified into the 30 to 50 percent range solid wood is specified for without condensation (NRC Canadian Building Digest CBD-4), which is why we often recommend engineered wood or narrower boards here.
