Why it matters

The problem with cheap basement flooring

Basements are cooler and damper than the rest of the house, and the wrong floor laid straight on cold concrete traps moisture, feels freezing underfoot, and can buckle or grow mould. The fix is choosing a moisture-friendly floor and installing it over a proper subfloor with the right moisture control – so your basement feels warm, dry and finished instead of cold and unfinished. Ottawa sits on Champlain Sea (Leda) clay measured at 64 percent natural water content at the National Research Council’s Gloucester test site – soil holding that much water against a foundation is why basement flooring decisions here are genuinely different.

Basement Flooring FAQs

What is the best floor for a basement?

Usually waterproof vinyl or engineered flooring over a proper subfloor, depending on your goals and budget. We help you choose on the quote.

How do you handle basement moisture?

With the right subfloor and moisture barrier under a waterproof-friendly floor, so moisture cannot wreck your investment.

Do I need a subfloor?

Usually yes. A subfloor lifts the floor off cold, damp concrete, which keeps it warmer and protects it from moisture.

Will the floor be warm in winter?

A proper subfloor makes a big difference in comfort, and we can talk through options if you want extra warmth.

Can you do the whole basement?

Yes, from a single room to the entire lower level.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes, free and in writing.

Ottawa specifics

What a slab is really telling you before you cover it

On a basement slab the adhesive spec is a go/no-go decision. Bostik’s BEST urethane is rated to a maximum 75 percent in-slab relative humidity (ASTM F2170); SikaBond T55 is rated to 90 percent – a five-fold difference in permitted vapour that can decide whether a job proceeds. Before covering a slab you can run the National Research Council’s own 1978 field tests (BPN 1978-11): a 1 m by 1 m polyethylene sheet left 24 hours, 50 mm tile-cement patches checked at 24 hours, or calcium chloride crystals under sealed glass – complete dissolution within 48 hours means the slab is too wet to floor. And because basements sit low, test for radon while you are down there: the City of Ottawa health unit found 6.2 percent of homes tested (n=64) at or above the guideline, and Health Canada is blunt that the only way to know is to test, regardless of location.
